The attached photos were taken in drydock at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in May, 1963. The ship was being refitted for the VDS (Variable Depth Sonar) and the experimental Prairie Masker system which masked the screw turncount (ships speed) to submarines that may be tracking the ship. Ah, San Francisco was great then. I had just turned 21 and met my first wife while there. Well, maybe it wasn't all that great.

Ray I can not ever remember calling any one by their first name. Even if you couldn't read the last name stenciled on their clothes when ask his name ,the only one given was the last. So you see you are Turner Radar man to me . When the ship would break away from refueling the X O would pass over the intercom LIGHT OFF THE Bubble Machine. Scotty Ships Artist
