Back in the Tonkin Gulf doing torpedo boat hunt. Whom ever we were having this conflict in the Gulf were using Fiber Glass hull torpedo boats most likely Russ never did fine out for sure. Do know they used Russ topedos that were as unperdictable had defective firing pins( remember) doing ammo transfer in De Nang while they were removing the fish out of the hull of the ammo ship. They had a lot of them and were the first surface target to have go over 36 knots. The Mk 25 Radar and its 61 amp were not designed of such a fast weak low in the water target. Our first attemps to go counter battery from shore targets to this Torpedo boat caused violent shaking and uncontrolled gun operations. Something had to be done after having servere injuries accure in the gun mounts. The rest of the Story tomorrow=Scotty
After going to Subic bay and getting a remote controled boat with the same radar return as the same responce as a russ boat we had gotten the 61 amp and guns mounts to lock on and track the 80 knot surface target. So one of our major jobs in the Gulf was to track and destroy all torpedo boats. Comcurdespac did make the stipulation that we were to identify the target before destroying it. We also were getting some ufo contacts traveling around 60 to 90 knots in the upper areas of Tonkin Gulf. They were strong and fell into the lock in notch but when going to the lock on mode the target would just disappear. After having this happening more and more one day when the air was clear of surface haze said target appeared on the radar and being one of our stronger targets and lasting a little longer I took the time to look at the target through our optical range finder. Where to my amazement low and behold the target was a large flock of some large white bird in a group riding on a strong air current. Observing the flock of birds as I went to lock on tracking mode the flock went to the four corners of the field of vision where there was not enough mass for the radar to pick up and hold. After reversing lock on called down to the bridge for Capt Smith to report to the 51 director for a view of the ufo targets. He also verified that what we were seeing on the radar was in fact these white birds. Nothing farther was said and we continued doing our patrols. the rest of the story tomorrow=Scotty
