Back in the day, when Scotty was not performing maintenance on the ship’s fire control systems or standing watch, he could be found on the mess decks, plot room, or fire control equipment room with drawing tablet and trusty #2 pencil in hand.  With these two simple tools, Scotty performed his particular brand of magic.  Shipmates wallet sized photos were transformed into 8X10 portraits.  Humorous shipboard events found their way into his cartoons.

After his career in the navy, Scotty took his skill in the electronics discipline and parlayed it into a successful second career in the private sector.  He is retired now and like many brothers from the Ernest G. Small, Scotty finds himself "on the beach".  With his newfound freedom and time, he has returned to his first love; drawing and painting.

Scotty's art is eclectic.  Not content with one subject or style, he produces landscapes, still life, portraits and an occasional whimsical piece of "pop art" along the lines of Andy Warhol.  And he does it all with colors he obtains by laboriously crushing and mixing from rocks and minerals.

Scotty produces original art and commissioned projects.  His work has been shown at numerous galleries and exhibits in Visalia, California, the central California valley and in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.  Scotty also conducts workshops and classes to teach others his medium.

I had the pleasure of attending my first Ernest G. Small reunion with Scotty last year in Portland.  It was a first for both of us and we were as excited as two new recruits on their first liberty.

We drove to Portland from San Francisco.  Thanks to a leaky hose in my car's cooling system the eight hour drive became a twelve hour drive;  a lot of time for us to catch up on the forty years since our last meeting.

In Portland, Scotty and I were able to reconnect with several shipmates that we had served with in the early 1960's. For me, it was a highlight of my recent years and sharing the time with Scotty made the trip all the more pleasurable.
